Bleach, cleaning, cleaning house, disinfecting, Gastroenteritis, Hydrogen peroxide, Lysol, lysol spray, Norovirus, preventing stomach bug, preventing stomach flu, Spray bottle, stomach bug, stomach flu, Wash hands

I have to admit, just the thought of the stomach bug makes me squirm. I hate it! Hate getting it, hate watching my kids have it, hate even hearing others have had it. I use to clean like crazy when I would hear it was going around, and we would still get it! I know, sometimes its inevitable, but I also learned that what I was using to clean wasn’t even working. So this evil bug can live almost anywhere for up to 2 weeks! Regular cleaners don’t do a thing either. Bleach and hydrogen peroxide. Oh and recently I read that Lysol spray changed its formula and now also kills it.

This evil bug is also know as the norovirus and the Norwalk virus. Whatever its called, its like deaths doorstep. So to keep it out of the house (best you can) here is the obvious, wash your hands! Every time someone comes into the house or uses the bathroom they should wash their hands. From what I have read, its best to wash for a solid minute with hot sudsy soap and water. I personally use the Lysol on the kids backpacks and lunchboxes too. Also, keep your hands away from your face!

As for cleaning, bleach is the way to go. I use bleach diluted with water in a spray bottle. I use it on all hard surfaces a couple of times a week. Def use it in the bathroom. For daily cleaning, I love hydrogen peroxide. Yes the stuff in the brown bottle for $.89! I just take an old spray bottle top and put it right on the bottle. It is light sensitive and will break down in a clear bottle. It is used in hospitals to kill super bugs (those crazy germs that there are no cures for). Its also just water with one extra molecule. Once exposed to air and light it starts to break down into water, in the process it suffocates all the germs. It is corrosive/bleaches on contact so be mindful about what you spray it on.

Oh, and hand sanitizers do not kill it either. I could honestly go on and on but that’s the basic info. Wash your hands, use bleach to disinfect, Lysol spray(only Lysol Brand III, not the generic) and hydrogen peroxide for daily cleaning. To end I have a small list of tips to keep the stomach bug at bay (although, sometimes it just gets ya)

Close the toilet lid (when flushed water particles can be sprayed into the air)

keep toothbrushes hidden (see above, you don’t want those toilet germs on your toothbrush you leave on the counter!)

If someone is sick in the house, use paper towels to dry hands not hand towels. I am rethinking hand towels in my house all together. Im thinking a basket of facecloths, one time use, hhhhmmmm.

wash hands before you eat anything

when eating out during flu season, choose well cooked foods and stay away from salads. Who knows if the staff actually washes their hands correctly. (probably not)

Eat healthy foods of course, I just read eating a lot of refined sugar suppresses the immune system. I haven’t looked into it but its a thought.

Stay healthy, and oh yeah, did I ever mention I was a germaphobe?

Christmas, Christmas Eve, Christmas mass, Christmas music

Love Christmas! The anticipation of Santa, Christmas mass, food, family. All of it. I listen to Christmas music from Thanksgiving until New Years. Yes, I’m one of those People. Well this year I had done everything right. Shopped early, got great deals and almost everything my girls asked for. Christmas Eve was great, Chinese food, Polar express and then wrapping and bed. Early morning happy kids. Big breakfast and pj’s. What’s better?? It was a great day.

At 1pm I got a text that my grandfather had passed away. I was close to him. It wasn’t a surprise, he had been sick. Still, shook me. I didn’t tell anyone. I needed to process it. I went through most of the day before telling my husband. He felt bad, hugged me, said he was sorry. I was in a back and forth motion of sad and happy.

When I finally laid my head on my pillow I realized that I was at peace with my “Bupa’s” passing. He gave my grandmother “Nana” the best Christmas gift ever, joining her in heaven. Just before I fell asleep I thought to myself, “if everyone I loved lived a full life and died in old age, I would be doing well”.

Merry Christmas Nana and Bupa, we love you. imageimage

I always forget to buy gift tags. I have even been known to write the name on the wrapped package with a sharpie, tacky, I know. So how happy was I to learn this new trick on how to turn Christmas cards into gift tags! If you are like me you save old Christmas cards. If you don’t do that it’s probably because you are super organized and never forget to buy gift tags anyway. I strive to be you but it’s never going to happen. So lets get started!

Start with a card that has a picture and/or saying you like.

You can use regular scissors or craft scissors with a fancier cut. I honestly used my kids craft scissors. Cut out the picture and use a hole punch and add string. Thats it! Just make sure the piece you cut out does not have writing on the back!

This year I also used wooden ornaments as gift tags for my kids. Here are some more pics of a few I made.

Happy cutting!!

almond bark, candy canes, homemade gifts, homemade teacher gifts, last minute gifts, last minute teacher gifts, peppermint bark, teacher gifts

Every year we go through this, what should we get for the teacher? Here are the two homemade gifts we are giving this year. Almond peppermint bark and brown sugar scrub. I made the bark today and it is ridiculously easy. Here is how I did it…

1 package of chocolate chips 1/2 cup almonds crushed 2 candy canes crushed

1 package of chocolate chips
1/2 cup almonds crushed
2 candy canes crushed

2013-12-16 (3)

Melt chocolate chips (I just used a glass bowl over water)
stir in 2/3 of the almonds and crushed candy canes

2013-12-16 (4)

line a baking dish with parchment paper (I used a small dish but you can double or triple the recipe and use a larger dish)

2013-12-16 (5)

spread chocolate mixture in dish, not too thin, and use the rest of the almonds and candy cane to sprinkle over the top. set aside to harden.

I needed to leave mine over night. When hardened break into pieces put into a decorative box or bag and voila! Lovely homemade gift. This is so easy, you can let the kids help and they will feel very proud to give it to their teacher.

Since the baby has a cold this week, I wasn’t able to fit in the scrub, but will be doing it tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Night all!

The 1st Post!

Ok, so I have no idea what I’m going to “Blog” about. I honestly had to research what the difference was between a blog and a regular website ( still not sure). I decided I was going to start one anyway. I am at home with the kids all day and grown up conversations are far a few between. Instead of boring the one year old with my ideas for a new soup or interesting article I am going to share it on here. I’ll be posting thoughts, recipes, crafts, videos, and whatever else strikes me that day.

I hope to inspire, make you laugh or just make you feel like your not alone, with my posts. I want feedback! Good bad and the ugly, give it to me. Maybe I will suck at this, so if I do tell me!

That’s it for the first post, don’t want to bore you yet. I will jump in full force tomorrow, for now good night.
